Is the Qi2 standard being introduced as a solution to issues with previous standards?
At CES 2023, the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) unveiled Qi2, the successor to the Qi wireless charging standard. Qi2 aims to clarify device support for consumers and introduces a Magnetic Power Profile to assist with accessory power. This profile is similar to Apple’s Magsafe technology, as Apple, a member of the WPC, played a significant role in the development of the Qi2 specification. The specification is set to be finalized in mid-2023.
Using Magsafe technology to improve interoperability for Android devices
One of the key benefits of Qi2 is its ability to improve interoperability and the user experience with magnetic accessories. This includes gadgets like camera tripods, smartwatches and power banks that can be attached to devices using magnetic force. While there are already many Magsafe and magnetic accessories available, they may not always be compatible with each other.
Qi2 seeks to solve this problem by establishing a unified standard that will make it easier for consumers to use a variety of accessories with their devices without worrying about compatibility.
QI2: THE MAGSAFE FOR THE MASSES! OKAY, OKAY, THERE ARE A FEW DIFFERENCES, BUT STILL PRETTY COOL.
Qi2 is a new standard that aims to improve compatibility and reduce consumer confusion over Qi certification. Qi2 will be used by companies such as Apple and Samsung to launch certified products in 2023 or 2024. In addition to phones, the standard is also designed for use with accessories like wearables and AR/VR headsets. Qi2 offers a single connector for multiple devices, similar to USB-C, which provides convenience and helps to reduce e-waste, cost, and travel complications.
However, it’s important to note that replacing one standard with another may not always be a complete solution, and it’s possible that backward compatibility issues may arise.
Qi vs Qi2: which one is better, and why?
Qi2 has a new feature called the Magnetic Power Profile. This helps devices like phones stay perfectly aligned with charging devices to charge better. Qi2 also has a safety feature that checks for foreign objects. It may charge faster on some devices because it is designed to use magnetic coils that make charging more efficient and lose less power.
However, the maximum power level for Qi2 is still 15W. This new design may allow for faster charging speeds on devices that were previously limited to 7.5W with the original Qi.
QI AND QI2 MAY HAVE THE SAME POWER LIMIT, BUT BETTER COIL ALIGNMENT COULD MEAN FASTER CHARGING SPEEDS!
The WPC plans to release a stronger wireless charging spec after Qi2 is finished in mid-2023. It’s not clear yet how much power the new spec will have. In the meantime, Qi2 will be improved and a new version is expected to come out in 2024 or later.
When can I get my hands on a Qi2-powered device?
In 2023, you can expect to see Qi2-certified products, including smartphones and chargers, hit the market in time for the holiday season. Apple and Samsung are among the major brands expected to embrace the standard, although no specific products have been announced yet.
