In a significant update to its mobile operating system, Apple has introduced a new AI-enhanced feature in the latest iOS 18.1 developer beta that allows users to record and transcribe phone calls with ease. This innovative feature is set to revolutionize the way we take notes during important calls, making it a game-changer for journalists, medical professionals, and anyone who needs to retain exact details from conversations.

To access this feature, users simply need to press the new “record” button located in the top-left corner of the call screen. Once activated, the system will inform all participants that the call will be recorded, ensuring that everyone is aware of the recording. The Phone app will then capture the entire conversation, automatically generating a transcription that is saved in the Notes app. Users can also access the complete audio recording and an AI-generated summary of the call in the same app.

Apple first teased this call recording feature at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, and it’s exciting to see it finally come to fruition. This feature has the potential to be incredibly useful for a wide range of users, from journalists conducting interviews over the phone to individuals who need to recall specific details from medical consultations. The iOS 18.1 developer beta also includes other exciting Apple Intelligence features, such as natural language search in photos, email summaries in the Mail app, and a refreshed Siri design. While an enhanced version of Siri with more advanced AI capabilities is not expected until 2025, according to Bloomberg, these new features are sure to enhance the overall user experience.
