Apple’s Folding iPad now expected in 2026

Speculation around Apple’s folding iPad has been rampant, with many anticipating its release next year. However, as reported in February, a 2026 launch seemed more plausible than 2025. A recent report now supports the 2026 prediction.

Analyst Jeff Pu, through MacRumors, shared this update in a note to investors. Pu mentions “pushouts” for the 20-inch folding iPad, a term used when a company delays a product’s launch date.

Previously, Pu predicted mass production of Apple’s folding devices in 2025 and 2026, with the iPad debuting first, followed by the folding iPhone in 2026. He now expects the iPad to enter mass production in late 2025, aiming for an early 2026 release.

Pu notes that Apple’s folding iPad is facing challenges common to all folding devices, particularly “display durability issues.”

Folding devices are more complex to design than their non-folding counterparts due to the unique stresses on their screens. While Pu doesn’t detail Apple’s specific issues, they likely mirror problems seen in early foldable models from Samsung and Google.

One major issue is delamination, where the display layers separate from repeated folding and unfolding. Other problems include dust infiltrating the screen’s crease and complications with hinge mechanisms.

It’s important to remember that these revised predictions are based on informed speculation. Despite plans for late-2025 production, it’s not guaranteed. Rumours about folding iPhones and iPads have circulated since 2017.
